MPA Awards Winners 2018


The MPA are delighted that Alastair Pegg, Marketing Director at The Co-operative Bank, will be chairing the judging for the MPA Awards 2018. Along with Alastair, the MPA have also assembled a stellar line up for the judging panel including industry bodies and business leaders from national and regional businesses.

The Co-operative Bank

Alastair has held a variety of senior marketing roles, and before joining The Cooperative Bank, had previously been the Head of Brands & Marketing at Nationwide Building Society, the world’s largest building society. Earlier in this career, Alastair had the role of Marketing Director for RAC – focusing on revitalising the brand with a marketing strategy. It was when he joined Virgin Money he developed a passion for all things digital. Now Marketing Director at The Co-operative Bank, Alastair has spearheaded the brands recovery and refresh, by re-focusing on the customer. Testament to the success of that strategy and principle; YouGov announced that The Co-operative Bank was its most improved brand across all categories for 2015.

Vanessa Clifford


Vanessa is Chief Executive of Newsworks. She has worked in the media and marketing industry for over 20 years from media trainee via client side and eturning to media agencies. Her last agency role was Head of Publishing at Mindshare leading the press exchange team and she was a core member of the GroupM trading team. At Newsworks her role involves overseeing and developing the relationship with media agencies and advertisers, championing newsbrands and their role in the multi-platform world.

Holly Dewsbury


Holly currently runs one of the UKI Agency teams from Facebooks EMEA HQ. Previous to this Holly ran both Agency and Direct orgs at Twitter EMEA following from her time spent within agencies in both the UK and Asia

Marcus Hadfield


Marcus is Chief Strategy Officer at Apadmi, the mobile technology group. With over 20 years experience in digital and brand marketing, he's delivered award-winning campaigns across every discipline and most sectors. Most of his career has been spent in advertising agencies, most recently as a Managing Partner at McCann Manchester. In 2017, he jumped into the mobile world to help clients get more out the increasingly close relationships people have with their devices. His question stays the same – why will customers care? Clients have included Expedia, Argos, Costa, American Airlines, CrossCountry Trains, Which?, Homebase, Sony, Aldi, World Vision, Plan International and more.

Patrick Harrison

Weber Shandwick

Director of Client Experience. With over 20 years high profile media relations experience, Patrick is Weber Shandwick’s London-based reputation management specialist, providing strategic Boardroom-level advice, media training and crisis support to a wide range of multinational companies, charities, NGOs and academic organisations. Patrick was The Prince of Wales’ Press Secretary for over ten years, working with many high profile British brands, institutions and individuals. He led the multi-stakeholder communications teams for the 2005 and 2011 royal weddings and for 24 official tours to 37 countries, as well as for hundreds of UK visits. Originally a journalist, Patrick spent eight years in Central Government communications.

Joyce Kelso


Associate Director, Marketing. Joyce has worked at a senior level in several communication agencies and in the not-for-profit sector. Joyce’s work at the IPA brings together the collective intelligence of its members to deliver future facing strategies that will ensure that its member agencies are more sustainable and profitable. With a passion for great creative work she has expanded her remit into several non-exec Director roles. 

Sean Keyes


Sean joined the Twitter European Headquarters in Dublin back in 2012 to help launch Twitter Ads in the EMEA Market. Before this Sean has worked in a variety of roles covering Sales, Marketing and Advertising across 15+ countries. Working with both Government and Private sector companies. Sean works across a wide range of clients from leading e-commerce sites, food delivery, Transportation to Media and Publishing. 

Chris Mawdsley


Chris began his media planning career in the lovely surroundings of McCanns in Prestbury in 1997 before moving to Feather Brooksbank just before the millennium bug ruined all our lives. A move to MediaVest Manchester 8 years later was followed by a move to MediaCity and the BBC in 2011. Now Head of Media Strategy, Chris is responsible for the planning and execution of a huge variety of campaigns for the Corporation, from dramas such Bodyguard and Doctor Who, perennial entertainment blockbusters such as the Apprentice and younger priorities such as Fleabag and This Country.

Jeff McCarthy


5xs award-winning blogger with as well as prize-winning author, Jeff is a board member of the MPA and has a key focus of driving marketing student employability at Manchester Met Uni. As a senior digital marketing specialist since 1996, he has helped many organisations across many sectors including Shop Direct, M&S Direct, 30+ football clubs, charities, sport brands and NGBs improve their digital and multi-channel marketing results. Jeff is a highly experienced speaker and trainer for CIM, IDM, Econsultancy, MMUBS and more as well as providing in-house training for CIM Academy.

Steve Miller


Alongside managing the membership and business services team at the PRCA, he also oversees membership recruitment and retention. Steve also manages the PRCA Partnership Programme.

Paul Morris

PZ Cussons / Co-op

Paul Morris, Former Global Digital Director at PZ Cussons & Head of Digital at Co-op. Paul has previously led global digital transformation and digital marketing at PZ Cussons (brands including St Tropez, Imperial Leather & Original Source), led digital at the Co-op (Food > Funeralcare) and had experience of working both client and agency side with brands including Wickes, Laterooms, Silverstone, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Cash Generator and Park Resorts. Katie Peate

Business Growth Hub

Katie leads the Hub’s offer to the digital, creative and technology sectors along with the Digital Growth programme. She joined The Business Growth Hub in April 2016 from Reading Room, where she was the youngest person ever to be appointed to the board of directors at the age of just 23. Since her appointment as head of digital, creative and tech, Katie has broken the mould of service delivery within the Hub, developing a programme for aspiring scale ups – Greater Connected - for businesses in the sector to grow through collaboration and community. In the last 12 months the programme has helped over 120 entrepreneurs increase sales by over £15m.

Julie Phelan 

Shop Direct Group PLC

Julie's creative career began in 1986 at Great Universal Stores in Manchester working as a graphic designer and shortly after Studio Manager. A huge part of this role was to be responsible for what would become the largest desktop publishing department in Europe. In 1994 Julie founded her own agency, Marlin Design and Marketing Ltd. Over a 15-year period she developed the business and grew a healthy portfolio of clients. In 2009, Julie returned client-side as Head of Creative at Shop Direct to launch an exciting new mature ladies fashion brand Isme, going on to become the Creative Head of Littlewoods. Now Julie leads the photographic, video and social content generation for Shop Direct as Head of Lightbox Studios.

Simon Reddican

Publishers Audience Measurement Company

Simon is the CEO of Publishers Audience Measurement Company. He joined as CEO of NRS Ltd, predecessor of PAMCo in June 2014, and has worked with the stakeholders in the transition to the new organisation. PAMCo will deliver NRS data until August 2017, when it will unveil AMP (Audience Measurement for Publishers), the new industry currency for published media. His career began working in advertising agencies and then moved over to the sales side, heading up sales at Classic FM’s digital portfolio, and then worked as a Strategist at News International across Times Media. 

Anna Sampson

Head of Insight, Magnetic Media

An insight practitioner with 16 experience spanning start-ups to big agencies, Anna started out as a research executive at Carat before moving onto Rise Communications and then Mediacom. She now fronts the insight narrative for Magnetic and prides herself on telling compelling stories with all sorts of research, data and evidence. Anna believes in insight with a purpose that can be used to inform, inspire and shape brilliant communications planning and creative ideas.
